Week 13 - Contrast

Example 1-Successive USE of contrast

In this example, we can tell that there is a head/body figure. We can also see 2 human-like hand figure. The reason why this poster is successful in the use of contrast is because they used the colors black and white. Black and white are very high contrasting colors and they were used to create the illusion of depth by imitating the illusion of the white hands overlaying the black figure. Although the pink/red fingernails do not contrast very well with white because they are both very bright colors, the fingernails were placed at areas that connect to both the white and black areas. Because it is placed in such areas, we can easily tell it apart from the black and then giving it full recolonization as fingernails. Another great use of contrast is the fact that the main title is in red which grabs attention. The contrast in scale also gives importance to the poster. The first thing that grabs your attention is this figure being eloped by a pair of white hands. This is because it is the largest object on the poster in contrast to the rest of the items on this poster. The next thing we notice is the main title of the poster, which is written in fairly large red letters compared to the rest of the text on this poster. The small and grey letters are the least attention receiving item on the poster. The reason is because grey does not contrast well with black, making it hard to read and this is intended by the design because they want to draw your attention to the title and actor names but not the sponsor and producers of the movie. Also the text is scaled to be very small so that it does not steal attention away from the rest of the poster, which is also intended by the designer.

Example 2: Poor USE of contrast

This is an example of a poor use of contrast. The reason why it is a poor use of contrast is because the text "The First Avenger Captain America" is hard to read. The main reason that contributes to this failure is because of the font. The font is not bold enough or large enough to be read clearly. On top of that, the majority of this poster is very mono with high contrasting whites and blacks. The placement of the text is in an area that is mixture of both making it hard to read because the text either balances with one color but contrasts with another. This creates a slight confusion as part of the text almost becomes invisible because of it's harmony with the darker colors.
