Week 5 The Good The Bad The Post

The Bad
This is an example of bad advertising. The advertisement is very unbalanced. There is no structure to the skeleton of the placements. This creates alot of stress in the viewers eyes as they cannot find a local point to focus on first. I believe that the creator tried to create attention at the top right corner but that focus was easily stolen away at the same time by the image of the female face and the bottle of the product. Then the logo is so large that it's as big as the catch phrase for the ad. In the image of the female face, the fingers point to the surface of her face but the additional text that is too thin to read creates stress to the eyes again because it is not clear enough to read. The same goes for the words on the leaf, especially when contrasting white ontop of green. This advertisement needs to level the image of the product and the logo more, the catch phrase needs to be sharpened and so does the picutre of the female face. The leaf feels like it's out of place and should not belong in the ad because its very rounded while everything else is very squared. The leaf itself was split into a graphic representation of a micro level and the actual leaf itself, however the ratio between the two is very unbalanced thus creating even more stress.

This is a poster for Hienz Ketchup. The color choice is very monochromatic. It has a very balanced color scheme. The cardboard breakfast representation creates a unbalance between the real eating utensils. This creates a subtle stress in the viewer but that stress is balanced by the overall color. Next the bottle is sharpened and emphasize to stand out, however this sharpening is balanced back out by the ratio of the cardboard breakfast to the bottle size. The poster is very symmetrical. The extra large image of the breakfast creates a sharpening effect that guides viewers to look from top to bottom for the poster. The words "without" ties in the whole poster by conveying the message that "Breakfast tastes like cardboard without Heinz Ketchup."

Interaction Between the 3 Levels

Representational:
This represents a window. The common 4 squares of glass with lines in between. However this also represents a flag with the flowing look. Probably the design of this logo was thinking that the display is a window of the computer. To control beyond our reach, through a window like magic.

Abstraction:
The 4 colors of the seasons: Green for Spring, Yellow for Summer, Red for Autum, and Blue for Winter, is used in this logo. What does the colors relate to the logo itself? Through our windows we can see all four seasons pass-by. We do so by looking outside of the window and to convey that to the viewers, you will have to assume the perspective of being indoors (where computers usually are) and looking outside. But to where are we looking? We are looking through our displays and into a virtual world controlled by us via a GUI (Graphic User Interface). So what this logo suggest is that we can control and interact with the outside world through our computers.

So this is a play on the idea of being able to look outside and connect with the world/virtual world while still being inside but being able to interact with it as well.

Symbol:
This logo symbolizes for the entire Microsoft Window series. Like Apple's apple or McDonalds double golden arc, this symbol will be recognized forever. The play on the world "window" and literally using a window shape to create the logo plus the colors representing the seasons convey the idea that this is everlasting and always changing just like the seasons. The window part of the logo is not only a play on the worlds but also saying that you can look outside the window without looking outside an actual window. The flowing shape that kind of looks like it was a flag has long been there since the very first window logo from the first version of the logo released. The flag can represent the flowing of time or just suggest that its a window to the outdoors where there is actually wind.

Week 2 Assignment

Symbol
The infamous McDonald logo is known for it's double arc. It is a symbol for a solution to hunger throughout the world. When you think of the symbol it links you to the idea of Ronald McDonald the clown as well. Now when we look at the Double Golden Arc, we can see a few things. First we see what it literally looks like, which is the letter "M". Next if we arc the world McDonald under the "M" we can personify it to become a smiling face with huge eyes from Ronald McDonald. Adding in the color choice of red and yellow, which are commonly used dressing colors (ketchup and mustard). This links back to burger and fries where we apply the most ketchup and mustard.

Abstract

The golden arcs can be broken down into a graphing image of 2 parabolas. When you break it down, it still looks like a "M". It retains properties of the symbol but via the graph, we can calculate the equation for each parabola. So the logo for McDonald can be boiled down to these 2 lines and then we can also go to say that this can be transformed into two mountains as well since Chinese art for mountains are usually very elongated and rounded at the top.

The Roman Colosseum is a historical landmark symbolizing an ancient empire. Whats more is that it represents competition between people, the gladiators. This was a imaged found on Google Image Search, and of course it is a photograph. The picture is taken in modern days but the building itself is the remain of a beautiful complete structure. It looks like it was probably bright marble white in the past and not this faded yellow. We can also look at th exterior design of the building. The many arches can represent doors. The arches are believed to be great support for this enormous building as well.
